kilometers east of Alexandroupolis on the important national route E90 in
northeastern Greece.

It is close to the village of Apalos, which is part of the Alexandroupoli municipality. In 1944, the airport was completed. It was designated as an international airport in 1955, with the present facilities and runway completed in 1975.

Democritus, an ancient philosopher born in Abdera, was the inspiration for the airport’s name.
